WooCommerce vs Shopify in 2026: Which Is Right for Your Business?

Platform Fundamentals

WooCommerce is a free, open-source WordPress plugin that transforms WordPress into an e-commerce platform. You control your hosting, your code, your data, and your destiny. Every aspect of the store is customizable if you have (or can hire) development resources. Shopify is a fully managed SaaS e-commerce platform. Shopify handles hosting, security, CDN, and infrastructure. You configure within their system but cannot access the server layer.

This fundamental difference — self-hosted vs. managed SaaS — drives every other distinction between the platforms. For my WordPress and WooCommerce development work, I implement WooCommerce extensively for Philippine businesses, and I have helped clients evaluate both platforms dozens of times. Here is my honest assessment.

Total Cost of Ownership

The cost comparison is more nuanced than it appears at first glance:

Cost ComponentWooCommerce (Basic)Shopify Basic ($29/mo)Shopify Advanced ($299/mo)
Platform fee₱0₱1,740/mo₱17,940/mo
Hosting₱1,000–8,000/moIncludedIncluded
Transaction fee (PH)₱0 (gateway fee only)2% + gateway fee0.5% + gateway fee
Theme₱0–6,000/yr₱0–10,000 (one-time)₱0–10,000
DevelopmentHigher (self-managed)Lower (managed)Lower (managed)

For a Philippine business processing ₱500,000/month in sales: Shopify's 2% transaction fee (Basic plan) costs ₱10,000/month — more than an entire year of decent WooCommerce hosting. This is the decisive cost factor for businesses at meaningful transaction volumes. If you are on Shopify Basic and processing significant volume, the math strongly favors WooCommerce or upgrading to Shopify Advanced.

SEO Capabilities

Shopify SEO has improved substantially since 2022, but WooCommerce still holds meaningful advantages for serious SEO work:

URL structure: Shopify forces specific URL structures for product pages (/products/slug) and collection pages (/collections/slug). You cannot change these. WooCommerce lets you define any URL structure you want. For stores migrating from another platform with established URLs, this is a significant issue.

Blog SEO: Shopify's built-in blog is basic. WooCommerce, being built on WordPress, has the best blogging and content management platform available. For content-driven e-commerce SEO strategies (where blog content drives traffic that converts to product sales), WooCommerce's WordPress foundation is a genuine competitive advantage.

Technical SEO control: WooCommerce with Yoast SEO gives you precise control over every meta tag, canonical, sitemap, schema, and robots directive. Shopify gives you good but less granular control. For most stores, Shopify's SEO capabilities are sufficient. For stores with complex technical SEO requirements (faceted navigation, international SEO, large catalogs), WooCommerce with proper plugins wins.

Page speed: Out of the box, Shopify stores tend to load faster than WooCommerce stores because Shopify's infrastructure is optimized. With proper WooCommerce optimization (managed hosting, WP Rocket, CDN), the gap is small but Shopify maintains a slight edge in median performance.

Payment Methods for the Philippines

This is the most important practical consideration for Philippine businesses:

Shopify PH payment situation: Shopify Payments (zero Shopify transaction fee) is NOT available in the Philippines. You must use third-party gateways: PayMongo (accepts GCash, Maya, credit cards), DragonPay (bank transfer, OTC), or PayPal. Shopify charges an additional 0.5-2% transaction fee on all sales processed through third-party gateways, on top of the gateway's own fees.

WooCommerce PH payment situation: WooCommerce has no platform-level transaction fee. You pay only the payment gateway's fee. Integration options: PayMongo (official plugin, free), Maya Business (official plugin), GCash via PayMongo, DragonPay (various plugins), and any global gateway (Stripe, PayPal, Braintree) with direct plugins. The flexibility and cost structure strongly favor WooCommerce for Philippine businesses processing significant volumes.

Scalability and Performance

Shopify is a managed platform — Shopify handles infrastructure scaling. If your store goes viral and gets 10,000 simultaneous visitors, Shopify's infrastructure handles it without you doing anything. This is a genuine advantage for businesses where traffic spikes are unpredictable and infrastructure management is not a core competency.

WooCommerce requires you to provision and manage infrastructure as your business grows. At small scale (under 1,000 monthly transactions), shared or basic managed WordPress hosting is sufficient. At medium scale, you need a VPS or managed WordPress hosting with better resources. At large scale (100,000+ monthly visitors), you need an infrastructure strategy involving CDN, object caching, and potentially database optimization. This is manageable but requires either technical capability or developer support.

The ceiling on WooCommerce is high — large WooCommerce stores serve millions of monthly visitors — but reaching that ceiling requires more active infrastructure management than Shopify.

Decision Framework: Which to Choose

Choose WooCommerce when: you are a Philippine business processing significant monthly volume where Shopify's transaction fees would be expensive; you need WordPress's blogging capabilities for a content-driven SEO strategy; you have access to a WordPress developer for setup and maintenance; you need custom functionality beyond what Shopify's app ecosystem provides; or you are already on WordPress for your main site.

Choose Shopify when: you want a fully managed platform with no infrastructure concerns; you are a non-technical founder who cannot manage WordPress; you are primarily selling internationally where Philippine payment limitations matter less; you need the best possible mobile commerce experience out of the box; or speed to launch is more important than long-term cost optimization.

For Philippine businesses under ₱1M/month in sales, either platform works and the choice often comes down to technical comfort and developer availability. Above ₱1M/month, run the transaction fee calculation carefully before committing to Shopify. See my e-commerce development services and WooCommerce development for how I build and optimize stores on both platforms, with examples in my portfolio.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is WooCommerce free?

WooCommerce the plugin is free, but running a WooCommerce store is not. You need web hosting ($10-100/month depending on scale), a domain (~$15/year), potentially a premium theme ($50-100 one-time or annual), and premium extensions for features like payment gateways, subscriptions, or advanced shipping. Total annual cost for a basic WooCommerce store is ₱15,000-50,000, which is often less than equivalent Shopify plans but requires more setup.

Can WooCommerce handle 10,000+ products?

Yes. WooCommerce handles large catalogs with proper hosting infrastructure. The requirements: a VPS or managed WordPress hosting with dedicated resources, a proper database optimization setup, a product search solution (Algolia or ElasticSearch via a plugin), and server-side caching. WooCommerce running on shared hosting with 10,000 products will be painfully slow — the platform is capable, but the infrastructure requirements scale up.

Does Shopify work well in the Philippines?

Shopify works in the Philippines but has payment gateway limitations. Shopify Payments (the built-in gateway with no transaction fees) is not available in the Philippines — you must use third-party gateways (PayMongo, PayMaya, DragonPay) which incur Shopify's transaction fee (0.5-2% depending on plan) on top of the gateway's own fees. WooCommerce has no equivalent platform transaction fee.
